We hear a lot about genetics these days, from using it to find out where your ancestors came from to testing for specific diseases. But what genes are, what the study of genetics covers, and how genetics can be used as an impactful health recommendations tool is still somewhat a mystery to most. Here at GeneWise Nutrition, we've discovered the value of knowing your genes, and want to share it with you. Below is a quick guide to what genetics is and how it can lead you to your optimal health.

What are genes?

Genes are bits of code found in your DNA that carry instructions for how your body works. They influence things like eye color or height, but also impact metabolism, cardiovascular health, detoxification, and your risk for certain diseases. While 99.9% of our genes are the same as everyone else’s, it’s the small 0.1% difference that makes each of us unique—and gives us valuable insight into how our bodies function.

What is genetics?

Genetics is the study of how traits are passed down through families and how our genes influence body processes. It also helps us understand how our bodies respond to the world around us—like the food we eat, the exercise we do, and the stress we experience.

What are genetic variants?

That 0.1% of difference between people is where genetic variants come in. Variants are like small “spelling changes” in our DNA that may affect how a gene works. These changes can influence how our cells and systems function—sometimes making things work better, and sometimes creating a higher need for support in certain areas.

What are some examples of genetic variants?

Genes affect nearly every system in the body, and variants can change how those systems function. For example:

  • MTHFR helps process folate and supports methylation, which is key for detoxification, heart health, and brain function.
  • COMT plays a role in how you break down stress hormones and neurotransmitters like dopamine.
  • ACE is linked to how your body may respond to power vs. endurance exercise.
  • GSTM1 helps clear toxins from your body.
  • APOE can impact inflammation, brain health, and how your body handles fats.
  • FADS1 influences how well you convert omega-3 and omega-6 fats for brain and hormone function.

These examples show just how much your genes can influence energy, mood, metabolism, and overall health.

How do genetic variants impact my health and wellness?

A common misconception is that we can’t change our genes—while that’s true, we can change how we live based on them. When you know which variants you carry, you can make smarter choices to support your body.

For example, someone with a slow caffeine metabolism gene may feel anxious or have sleep issues after too much coffee. Another person may need more antioxidants or omega-3 fats due to slower detox or higher inflammation risk. When we understand your genetic blueprint, we can help you make targeted changes that actually work for your body.

What is genetic testing, and what does it do?

How do we find out what a person's genetic makeup is? Take a test! Genetic testing is simple and painless—it’s just a cheek swab. But the results can reveal a lot. Testing can show how your genes affect things like energy, nutrient needs, detox, inflammation, blood sugar, brain health, and more.

As a practitioner with 3X4 Genetics, I use a science-backed test that looks at 157 genes connected to metabolism, fitness, inflammation, detoxification, hormones, cognition, and dietary response. This test turns complex data into clear, practical recommendations—so you can take action and feel your best.

Here are some of the insights we uncover:

  • Nutrient needs: How well do you process fats and carbs? Do you need more vitamin D or antioxidants? Should you limit caffeine, gluten, or salt?

  • Fitness strengths: What type of exercise will your body respond best to? How can you train smarter in alignment with your genes, for better performance, faster recovery, and fewer injuries?

  • Proactive prevention: Is your body more prone to high blood pressure, high blood sugar, or high cholesterol? How can you support your cardiovascular system and your immune system for more resilience as you age? We also look at processes like your inflammation, detoxification, methylation, and more.

  • Ideal Weight: Why does your body resist weight loss and how can you manage your weight in a healthy way that is personalized to your unique body?

  • Stress strategies: How does your life stress affect your brain health, your hormones, your sleep quality, and your overall wellness? More importantly, what can you do about it?

Every gene in the test has been carefully selected based on two key factors: scientific validity and actionability. Each gene is backed by peer-reviewed research that clearly defines its function and how different variants may affect your health. The test only includes genes where there is enough evidence to support meaningful insights and practical steps you can take to improve your well-being.

The test is eligible for HSA/FSA reimbursement. Once your genetic sample is submitted, results are typically available within 3–4 weeks. Your DNA sample is securely destroyed 90 days after processing.
